These include instances of virulent antisemitism as well as indirect forms such as scapegoating Jewish students for the actions of Israel. Social and newspaper media ephemera are used to situate expressions of antisemitism, serving to contextualize the lived experience of those photographed/interviewed and to make visible proofs of pervasive antisemitism. Shared values are revealed through celebrations and communal gatherings. Observational photography, portraits and still life illustrate familial/community resilience. Investigating colonial histories within the British Empire and, specifically, the adoption of Hindu casteism into South Asian ideology, Granddaughter serves to highlight issues of globalisation and late capitalism regarding the overarching effects of migration and hierarchies in a greed-oriented world, and ultimately, the drive among many people for divine connection, regardless of religious disposition.Ī Peoplehood | Amiut Yehudit is a multimedia installation exploring the complexity of contemporary Jewish identity in Toronto, and the emotional impact of today’s insidious antisemitism within a community that celebrates its identity in many forms. In deploying old and new film technologies to investigate my roots, along with compiling archival film footage, photographs, home videos, and my grandfather’s writings and lectures on divine enlightenment, the formal approach of this project reflects its key theme–my search for generational truths.

Specifically, the project exemplifies my grandfather’s shifting views on religion and spirituality resulting from his Guyanese upbringing, East Indian racial and cultural ties, and Canada as his and my family’s final destination point. Granddaughter is a multi-channel, autoethnographic video installation that investigates Indo-Guyanese identity and the corresponding diasporic religiosity of individuals settled within Canada’s heterogeneous religious landscape.
